Understanding Mood Disorders
Mood disorders are a category of mental health conditions characterized by persistent disturbances in mood, affecting a person’s emotional state, perception, and behavior. These disorders can significantly impact daily functioning, relationships, and overall quality of life. The most common types of mood disorders include:
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)- – is a childhood behavioral disorder characterized by a persistent pattern of negative, hostile, and defiant behavior toward authority figures, such as parents, teachers, or other adults in positions of authority. Children and adolescents with ODD often display a recurrent pattern of disobedience, defiance, and hostility, which significantly impacts their relationships and daily functioning.
Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) – is a relatively newly recognized mental health disorder that primarily affects children and adolescents. It is characterized by severe and recurrent temper outbursts that are disproportionate to the situation or provocation and inconsistent with developmental level.
Conduct Disorder – is a serious behavioral and mental health disorder that typically manifests in childhood or adolescence. It is characterized by a persistent pattern of violating the basic rights of others or societal norms, as well as significant aggression toward people and animals, destruction of property, deceitfulness, and rule-breaking behavior.
